Dr. Wangari Maathai, "Tree of God"

Dr. Wangari Maathai, "Tree of God"

This video tells its Kenyan Kikuyu spiritual / religious story in its first two and half minutes (2:30). Recommended.

An excellent documentary in its entirety, "Taking Root" tells the story of one of the world’s most successful and empowering ecological restoration efforts, led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai (1940-2011), as well as the impacts of Britain’s ruthless colonization of Kenya, 1880-1900.

I can't recommend this documentary strongly enough to any person looking to understand indigenous perspectives on colonization, feminism in Africa and the developing world, and/or "what happened" to the Earth's ecosystems over the last 150 years.

Learn more about Wangari Mathai's incredibly successful reforestation efforts, continuing today, via GreenBeltMovement.org. Learn more about the Kikuyu people here. --ChrisS
